Peterborough Gallery

A new exhibit chronicles town’s past

The Board of Directors and staff are pleased to announce the opening of the Peterborough Gallery, a new exhibit in the entry gallery at the Historical Society.

The exhibit opens on Friday, September 5 with a reception from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Developed by a committee including board members, staff, and volunteers, the exhibit uses a timeline format to explore Peterborough’s history.

The timeline begins with an overview of Native American settlement in the Peterborough area. Through images and artifacts from the Society’s collections, the chronology covers ten periods of the town’s history from the original Scotch-Irish settlers to the present.

The gallery committee spent three years developing and researching the exhibit. Committee members were Steve Lord, Board member and committee chairman; Dorothy Peterson, Board member; John Morison, Historical Society  member; Joan Brewster, Board member; Ellen Derby, former Executive Director; Teresa Steer, Assistant to the Director; and Michelle Stahl, Executive Director.

Dr. Jack Resch, Professor of History at UNH and Dr. Robert Goodby, archaeology professor at Franklin Pierce College provided additional research and advice. Historical Society member Anna Larson lent her proofreading skills to the project.

Woodspring Design of Atkinson, NH designed and created the graphic panels that make up the exhibit.

The exhibit was made possible through the generous support of Granite Bank, Charter Trust Company, Peterboro Basket Co., The Cobbs Antiques and Auctioneers, Cambridge Trust Company, The Petersons Inc., and The Peterborough Transcript.
