Historical Society celebrates Centennial

February 1, 2002

February 1, 1902 was a sunny day with temperatures ranging from 17 to 26 degrees. February 1, 2002 was a day of freezing rain and ice with the temperature hovering around 32 degrees. Despite the ice storm, the Historical Society celebrated its 100th birthday with a gala party. The Centennial Ragtime Celebration was a huge success with more than 100 people braving the weather to celebrate this milestone in the Society’s history.

President Teddy Roosevelt (Rob Koch) made a surprise visit as did his contemporary Mark Twain (Taylor Morris). Local luminaries included Clara Foster Bass (Eleanor Strand), Jennie Hadley Field (Dorothy Peterson), and 1902 Peterborough High School baseball star Rob Paquet (Ian West).

Singing and dancing broke out to Joanna Miller’s ragtime piano tunes and old standards.

Guests enjoyed hors d’ouevres provided by R. A. Gattos, Aesop’s Tables, the Bagel Mill, A&P, and Society members as well as a golden Centennial cake created by Nichole Currier of Bennington. Peggy VanValkenburgh and her able staff of waitresses kept the food coming.

Historical Society Director of Education Ellen Derby and docents Gertrude Cleverdon, Mary Carol Grip, Rachel Billings, and Susie Mansfield guided guests through the museum.

The Historical Society is grateful to Charter Trust Company for their generous sponsorship of the Centennial.
